How Old Spice Went from Dad Jokes to Viral Sensation

The Problem

Old Spice was stuck. Associated with dads and granddads, the brand had lost relevance with younger audiences. Sales were declining and the brand felt dusty.

They needed a reset, but not a rebrand. They needed a personality transplant.

The Campaign: "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like"

In 2010, Old Spice launched one of the most memorable ad campaigns in history. Isaiah Mustafa stared straight into the camera and confidently declared, "I'm on a horse", while rattling off why your man could never be as cool as him, but could at least smell like it.

The commercials were ridiculous. That was the point.

Within 48 hours of launch, the video had millions of views and sparked conversations across every social platform.

Why Humour Works

The ads worked because they didn't take themselves seriously. They tapped into a real insight, men's grooming advertising was either boring or hyper-masculine, and flipped it with self-aware comedy.

Suddenly, Old Spice was cool again. Not because the product changed. Because the story changed.

The Lesson

Don't be afraid to poke fun at yourself. Sometimes the best way to revive a brand is to get playful and totally unexpected.

  • Could humour give your brand a fresh, new vibe?
  • Is your brand taking itself too seriously?
  • What one playful idea could surprise your audience and make them share it?

Old Spice didn't just sell deodorant, they made people laugh. And in the process, they became relevant again.
