How to build a marketing plan for your business

A marketing plan is a roadmap. It tells you who you're trying to reach, what you want to achieve and how you'll get there, so every dollar has a job.
Here's how to build one in six steps.
The short version
To build a marketing plan, research your market, customers and competitors first. Set SMART goals: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Define your audience and write simple customer profiles. Choose the channels where that audience already spends time. Track traffic, conversions and return on spend. Review the plan regularly as the business and the market change.
Six steps to a marketing plan
01Research the market
Start with the facts. Talk to potential customers about what they need and what problems you could solve for them. List your main competitors and their strengths and weaknesses. Keep up with trends in your industry.
The research shows you the gaps in the market, and where you can win.
02Set SMART goals
SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.
Instead of "increase sales", write "increase sales by 20% next quarter". Give every goal a deadline and a number, so you can track it.
03Know your audience
Group your customers by who they are, what they value, how they behave and what they need.
Then write customer profiles: short descriptions of your ideal customers, based on real data. Use them to guide every marketing decision.
04Choose your channels
Pick the channels where your audience already spends time:
- Social media builds awareness and community
- Email keeps leads warm and turns them into customers
- Content, such as articles and videos, shows your expertise
- SEO brings in steady search traffic over time
- Paid ads bring in leads quickly. See Google Ads vs Meta Ads
Start with two or three channels done well, rather than ten done badly.
05Measure results
Track website traffic, conversion rates, engagement and return on spend. Check the numbers regularly and move budget toward what works.
06Review and adjust
A marketing plan isn't a one-off document. Review it every quarter, and update it when your goals, offer or market change.
